As we know, racism is an issue that has been a major part of Long Islands creation and history since the first colonists arrived here. From the colonization of Paumanok, to the segregation created by Robert Moses, to the alt-right Nazi groups STILL ACTIVE on the island, many Long Islanders remain unaware of the issues that our neighbors constantly face.

Assemble Long Island and Showing Up for Racial Justice have teamed up to create a workshop to educate Long Islanders about these issues and about the impact racism still has on the entire way our society here on LI functions today.

Education is the most powerful gift you can give somebody and with that education, the hope is to evoke change one workshop at a time. We will teach people about the origin of Long Island, the way our colonization is still effecting all long islanders to this day, and ways we can use this knowledge to make a change in our society.

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is a national organization that brings hundreds of thousands of white people into fights for racial and economic justice.

Assemble Long Island is a progressive, grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for human rights. Our mission involves bridging the gaps among progressive political, advocacy, and activist groups across Long Island, fueling the fight against fascism, and championing basic human rights for all. We strive to inspire our fellow Long Islanders to become the agents of change essential for meaningful reform.
