MEDFORD, NY — Police have identified the man who died in a crash involving a fire truck Thursday night as Jason Copper, 39, of Sound Beach.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Route 112 and Jamaica Avenue in Medford. Copper was driving a 2017 Toyota Camry when his vehicle collided with a fire engine from the Medford Fire Department, which was responding to a call with its lights and sirens activated.
Copper was rushed to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Two firefighters in the truck suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The fire truck had been en route to a reported residential fire at the time of the crash. Authorities say the intersection was partially closed for several hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Copper,” said Suffolk County Police spokesperson Lt. Andrew Martinez. “This remains an active investigation, and we are reviewing all available evidence, including traffic camera footage.”
Both vehicles have been impounded for mechanical inspections, and no criminal charges have been filed as of Saturday.
Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls remain confidential.
