Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle in East Islip

East Islip, N.Y. — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday evening in East Islip, according to Suffolk County police.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of Union Boulevard and Irish Lane, an area lined with small businesses and evening traffic. Police say a vehicle traveling eastbound on Union Boulevard hit an adult pedestrian who was crossing the street.

First responders arrived within minutes and performed lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting the victim to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where they were later pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police did not immediately release the name of the victim, pending notification of family.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad closed the intersection for several hours Tuesday night as they examined skid marks, took photographs, and collected debris from the roadway. Traffic was temporarily diverted down neighboring streets while the investigation continued.

Neighbors described the area as busy and poorly lit at night. “People drive too fast down this stretch,” said one East Islip resident who lives nearby. “You take your life in your hands just trying to cross.”

Police have not filed any charges as of Wednesday morning, but the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
