Coram man pleads not guilty in shooting of Suffolk officer
This afternoon, a man from Coram denied the allegations of shooting a Suffolk police officer. According to police, Janell Funderburke fired at Officer Michael LaFauci during an inquiry into an armed robbery earlier this month, resulting in him getting wounded in his leg.
Today, Funderburke entered a plea of not guilty in response to a 13-count indictment. The indictment involved additional charges against the individual, who is currently 20 years old. The charges included 12 felony counts.
The attorney for Funderburke claims that his client did not have any plans to murder the officer. Should Funderburke be found guilty, he may receive a sentence of 40 years or life imprisonment, which may be served consecutively with a 25-year imprisonment term for the robbery charges.
Funderburke was ordered to remain in detention until June 12 when he is scheduled to appear in court, and no option for bail was given.
