Three-year-old girl injured, suspect deceased following police standoff in Ridge

During an overnight police standoff on Long Island, a young girl sustained serious injuries, and the situation resulted in the death of a suspect.

On Tuesday, August 22, Suffolk County Police Homicide detectives visited a Ridge residence to probe a murder that transpired in Central Islip in June. During their investigation, the suspect discharged a handgun at the detectives, resulting in serious injuries to a child, before ultimately taking his own life.

In connection to the murder at 117 Hawthorne Ave. on June 19, homicide detectives proceeded to 6B Ticonderoga Court at around 8:30 p.m.

While conducting an interview with a friend of the suspect residing at the location, detectives became aware that the suspect was present within the house.

Detectives instructed both the friend and children who were present in the residence to exit the house.

Gary Jones, 38 years old from North Amityville, the suspect in question, emerged armed with a handgun from a room within the house. He proceeded to discharge multiple shots at the detectives, according to the police.

Suffolk County Police reported that the detectives retreated from the house and refrained from firing back.

One of the shots fired by the suspect penetrated a wall, hitting a 3-year-old girl in the adjacent apartment.

The child was quickly taken to a nearby hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound. She underwent surgery and is presently in stable condition.

Detectives and police officers encircled the house, summoning hostage negotiators and an Emergency Services Unit for assistance.

Emergency Services officers employed a robot to enter the premises, and they discovered Jones deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation remains underway, and if you have any information, please reach out to the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
