BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT

Summary:

Due to reports of fearfulness, growling, lunging; Bob is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment.

DOG-DOG:

Summary: 12/9/23 When greeting another dog through the fence, Bob approaches with a loose body and wagging tail to greet.

FUN FACTS:

Summary (7):

12/9/23 Staff member reported that when approaching Bob this morning he began lunging and hard barking.

Two different staff members approached and Bob was at the front, neutral. He was easily leashed using treats and walked out. Bob was led to the play yard and relieved himself right away. He remained tense and aloof with handlers. Bob allowed handlers to clip his leashes without issue. When approaching his kennel, he stops and begins to drink water incessantly. He stops and remains at the front of his kennel and will not walk in, handlers begin tossing treats but he does not follow. Handlers muscle him into kennel and he is placed back this way.

12/8/23 Bob is at the front of the kennel, tense, he begins to loosen slightly when treats are offered. As handler stops feeding him and moves away, he quickly lunges towards the front barking and growling. He then settles and approaches the front, loose body and wagging for treats. Handlers are able to place leashes on him using treats, he is walked out and led to the play yard. Bob relieves himself right away and remains tense bodied throughout, he shows no interest in interacting with handlers and remains aloof throughout. When handler attempts to take a picture of Bob and calls him over, he freezes and hard stares. The other handler quickly squeaks a toy and he breaks his focus on handler. He is returned to kennel without issue and leashes are removed using hook.

TRY NOT TO USE A PHONE

For best results with forms, try to fill them out on a tablet or a computer. People who try to complete NYCACC applications or applications with many New Hope rescues often find that by using a phone, the applications don’t go through.

NYCACC ADOPTIONS:

If you want to ADOPT a dog who is NOT marked for β€œNew Hope (rescues) only” and who is NOT needing β€œEmergency Placement”; AND you can get to the shelter IN PERSON to complete the adoption process and pick up this dog, please contact the shelter directly using the link or instructions provided at the top of the post. Please send me a private message if you need assistance.

If you want to ADOPT a dog who is NOT marked for β€œNew Hope (rescues) only” and who is NOT needing Emergency Placement, AND you cannot get to the shelter IN PERSON, please send me a message in Facebook Messenger for assistance.

If you want to ADOPT a dog who is marked as being available through NEW HOPE rescues ONLY; or you want to adopt any dog needing EMERGENCY PLACEMENT, please privately message me for assistance as time is of the essence to save these dogs. Please note, dogs on the EMERGENCY PLACEMENT list cannot be reserved by using a phone, you must be on a tablet or computer for your reservation to go through.

*******************

NYCACC FOSTERING:

If you want to FOSTER any dog, including dogs marked for NEW HOPE (rescues) ONLY, and dogs on the EMERGENCY PLACEMENT list, please privately message me for assistance. Please don’t delay. New Hope only dogs are only available through rescues, and time is usually of the essence. Emergency Placement dogs usually only have 42 hours to find placement, so time is always of the essence.

*******************

NEW HOPE RESCUES:

NYCACC dogs cannot be pulled to safety by rescues unless the rescue is already a NEW HOPE RESCUE PARTNER. Rescues can fill out the shelter’s paperwork to apply. Not all are approved.

********************

RANGE OF LOCATIONS WHERE YOU MUST BE LOCATED:

To foster or adopt any NYCACC DOG, YOU *MUST* live in NY, NJ, PA, CT, RI, DE, MD, MA, NH, VT, ME or Northern VA. These are the shelter rules and I cannot change them.

IN ADDITION, many NEW HOPE RESCUE PARTNERS will only let you foster for them, or adopt from them, if you are fairly close to the location of the rescues themselves (so you can use their veterinarian for certain services, for home checks, adoption events if you are fostering, etc.) For example, if the pulling rescue only wants fosters on Long Island, you will need to live there. Not every rescue is willing to work with every person depending on location. We will try to find a rescue willing to work with you if you are within the shelter’s aforementioned list of states.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION RATINGS DESIGNATED BY THE NYCACC:

Level 1

Dogs with Level 1 determinations are suitable for the majority of homes.

Level 2

Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience.

Level 3

Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters.

Level 4

Dogs with Level 4 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters.

NEW HOPE ONLY

Dogs with New Hope Only determinations need to be fostered or adopted through a New Hope rescue. These dogs need someone experienced, and often carry other stipulations as determined individually such as the need to go to an adult only home (no children under 13), and/or the need for a single pet home, etc. A pre screener application must be completed at: https://forms.gle/ozHex3uqvNkQt2dq9
