17-Year-Old Seriously Hurt in Route 25A Pedestrian Crash in Mount Sinai

Suffolk County Police are investigating after a vehicle struck the teenager near Chestnut Street

MOUNT SINAI, NY — A 17-year-old was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 25A in Mount Sinai, according to Suffolk County Police.

The collision happened shortly before 1 a.m. on August 20 near the intersection of Route 25A and Chestnut Street.

Police said the teenager, identified as Yerlin Amaya of Mount Sinai, was attempting to cross Route 25A when he was struck by a westbound 2020 Acura.

The vehicle was being driven by 18-year-old Ayden Vagner of Miller Place, according to police.

Amaya suffered serious injuries and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for medical treatment.

Vagner was not injured.

Detectives Investigating

Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating what led to the collision.

As part of that investigation, authorities impounded the Acura so it could undergo a safety inspection.

Police have not announced any charges in connection with the crash.
