Suffolk County Comptroller Recovers More Than $47,000 in Unclaimed State Funds

Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr. says another 150 claims have been submitted to New York State for review

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. — The Suffolk County Comptroller’s Office has recovered more than $47,000 in unclaimed funds from New York State, according to a press release issued by Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy announced that his office successfully recovered $47,841.98 in unclaimed funds and has submitted another 150 claims to the state for review.

Unclaimed funds can include money from old bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance refunds, utility deposits and stock certificates. Dormant accounts are eventually turned over to the New York State Office of the State Comptroller, which maintains a system for locating and claiming money.

“I am committed to safeguarding all taxpayer dollars,” Kennedy said in the release. “My Office has already submitted another 150 claims to New York State for review. I will ensure that all of Suffolk County’s unclaimed funds are pursued and accounted for.”

According to Kennedy’s office, the recovery is part of its ongoing effort to maximize taxpayer dollars and ensure money belonging to Suffolk County is identified and accounted for.

The additional 150 claims remain under review by New York State, according to the release.
